The Center for Family Life, a Brooklyn non-profit that develops immigrant worker-owned businesses, is embarking on an ambitious venture. The Center is incubating a new social franchise cooperative called Coopportunity which knits together the worlds of worker-centered social justice and the universe of commercial franchising with the goal of building a model that can scale with impact. Drawing on a broad range of qualitative interviews, this study explores specific elements of this new model in-depth, including territory formation and data benchmarking. It also examines business models, marketing, legal considerations and management practices. This research examines the strengths and tensions of the franchise sector and explores the world of social franchising and cooperative alternatives. It presents information and recommendations to inform the development of the Center’s model, and lays out lines for future research.
