Introduction to Worker Cooperatives: A Four-Part Presentation or Tutorial

Part One offers a broad overview of worker cooperatives. Topics include cooperative values, what makes worker cooperatives different from other businesses, and brief case studies of four diverse cooperatives: Beyond Care in Brooklyn, NY; Union Cab in Madison, WI; Design Action Collective in Oakland, CA; and Equal Exchange in Bridgewater, MA.
Part Two addresses diverse of organizational models used in worker cooperatives. Topics include governance versus management, the difference between hierachical and collective management structures, and diagrams of the organizational structures used by Beyond Care in Brooklyn, NY; Union Cab in Madison, WI; Design Action Collective in Oakland, CA; and Equal Exchange in Bridgewater, MA.
Part Three deals with decision-making in worker cooperatives. Topics include tools for running healthy and productive meetings, sample meeting ground rules, roles, an agenda template, flow charts diagraming the development of proposals, and descriptions of majority and consensus decision-making.
Part Four deals with strategies for building a strong foundation. Topics include vision and mission statements, personnel policies, intake processes, job requirements and expectations, and tools for addressing conflicts and grievances.
